Bristol council selects Harlow as mayor
Promoting and improving economic development is the top priority of newly selected Mayor Ed Harlow.
In a 5-0 vote Friday morning, the City Council unanimously tabbed Harlow to succeed Don Ashley during its annual reorganizational meeting. Ashley, who submitted Harlow’s name for consideration, remains on the council. Jim Steele, who was also elected last year along with Ashley and Harlow, was the unanimous choice for vice mayor.
Although largely a ceremonial position in the city’s manager-council form of government, Harlow wants to place an even greater focus on attracting good jobs to the Twin City.
“Bringing in new businesses – economic development – is really important. We need good manufacturing jobs. We need jobs where people make things and maybe use some of the products already made here,” Harlow said after the seven-minute meeting.
Harlow said the city needs to improve relations with Washington County, Va., and work cooperatively in job recruitment. He also wants to continue the city’s relationship with its sister city in Tennessee.
“If jobs come to Bristol, it doesn’t matter if it’s on the Virginia side or the Tennessee side. We’d rather have them in Virginia, but our residents benefit either way,” Harlow said. “It’s the same way with Washington County.”
Harlow said he looks forward to working with David Shumaker, Bristol, Tenn.’s current vice mayor who is expected to be chosen mayor by his City Council Tuesday. The two have served on the Rhythm & Roots Reunion steering committee since the downtown music festival’s inception 11 years ago.
“We’re landlocked, but we’ve got a lot of assets,” Harlow said of his city. “With BVU’s infrastructure and our easy access to Interstate 81, Bristol can grow.”
The mayor predicted some additional restaurant and commercial development will continue at Interstate 81’s Exit 7, but may shift to the less populated southern side where a new Cheddar’s Casual Café is expected to be built near the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.
“We need to focus more on our downtown and our mall. There are 1,000 people employed in downtown Bristol and 600 at the Bristol Mall. That’s worth paying more attention to,” Harlow said.
