NEW YORK STATE -- For Lashawn Carter, the regular trip to Myrtle Beach got the boot. Instead, he's heading up to Lake Placid with the family.

"There's a little bit of a decrease in the holiday travel for the Fourth of July weekend this year versus last year and its down a little under three percent in our area and that's probably attributable to some of the gas prices that we've been seeing," said Nancy Shanley, of AAA Hudson Valley.
It's downright painful to look as the dollars pump out of your bank account. It's keeping many drivers closer to home for the holiday.
We've been seeing them for a while and many drivers have lost hope they will ever come down.
"There's nothing you can do about it. What am I going to do? Tell me what to do and I'll do it."
"I go to work and I go home now because I can't really afford to be driving all over the place, I can't really afford to take weekend getaways."
But wherever New Yorkers are spending the weekend, they say it's about the family.
Carter said, "Spend time with the kids in the summer, a little swimming.
