Fishing is a great sport for kids
Its summer, the kids are out of school and you're looking for activities to keep them entertained. I might be a little biased, but in my opinion, it would be a shame to let a summer pass without taking the children in your life fishing at least once. Fishing is an activity that promotes a multitude of important values that, unfortunately, many children are never exposed to in this day and age.
Fishing teaches children about the beauty and natural wonders of our local saltwater sounds, rivers, and marshes. These are things that must be experienced firsthand to be fully appreciated. No amount of classroom instruction or reading about our Lowcountry estuaries can take the place of taking a child out into this unique environment and letting him or her see it through their own eyes.
Fishing teaches children about the importance of conservation and being responsible stewards of our waters. Fishing teaches children that there is much more to life than television, video games, and the Internet. Fishing teaches patience, planning, strategy, and the fact we are a part of nature and have direct impacts on it.
Fishing is an activity that children can develop into a passion that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.
No doubt organized sports, piano lessons, karate classes and the like are great activities for children and teach plenty of valuable life lessons, but how many kids stick with these activities into adulthood? In order to help foster an interest in fishing it is important to introduce children to the sport properly. Over the last decade of working as a professional fishing guide I've learned a few things about what makes fishing trips exciting for kids and leaves them eager to go again.
Keep the trip short. Let's face it, kids get bored, even with fun things, quickly. Dragging a 5 year old out on an eight-hour fishing trip is usually a recipe for disaster. Depending on the age of the child two to four hours is perfect for a first saltwater fishing trip.
Quantity is always better than quality when it comes to fishing with kids. Trust me when I say action is key. Children who are new to fishing just want to catch fish and as many as possible. Twenty small sea bass, toadfish, or sand sharks trump one nice cobia any day of the week for most kids.
When it comes to fish species, the more weirder, the better. Kids love catching anything that looks really strange, has teeth, or a stinger. While most experienced fishermen scoff at catching small sharks or stingrays, kids absolutely love it. Experienced fishermen must put their bias aside when fishing with kids and happily target what they may consider trash fish.
