Chinatown bus line links Roanoke and New York

A Ming An bus gets ready to leave Chinatown at 59 Canal Street in New York, loading passengers headed to Roanoke or to one of the many other stops along the way.
Cash Zheng, owner of the Ming An bus service, works from a bus station at 59 Canal Street in New York, a location several other bus companies work from as well.
There are 457 highway miles from Roanoke to New York, and this bus will take you for $50. It's an almost-new, 61-seat coach that pulls up minutes before its nightly 10 p.m. departure from the curbside of a Northwest Roanoke Chinese buffet, between a hair salon and a hearing aid store.
It makes its trip in about eight hours, stopping along Interstate 81 to pick up Chinese immigrants commuting to or from service jobs. It picks up New Yorkers transplanted to the South who want to visit family. It picks up anyone looking for a cheap trip.
On Sunday night, 18-year-old Xi Lin got on. He's a senior at Franklin County High School who waits tables at the restaurant his parents run in Rocky Mount, Peking Chinese Grill. Lin sat two rows behind the driver when bus No. 0809 rolled out of the parking lot with nine passengers and onto I-81 at 10:10 p.m.
"I've been taking this bus for a while," Lin said. "All Chinese people know about it."
That may be true, and Chinatown buses to New York may have become commonplace in other cities. But in Southwest Virginia, the nightly run from Roanoke to America's most populous city remains obscure.
Ming An Inc. has traveled this route since early 2010. And on a typical night, the 10 people eating fried rice in Town Square Boulevard's Hibachi Grill & Supreme Buffet outnumber those waiting for the bus outside.
The only way to find out who rides and why is to take the trip. Before you do, know this: Chinatown buses, with a well-developed reputation for low-cost service, are gaining notoriety for lax safety.
Monday morning, a bus traveling from Kentucky to Chinatown struck a tractor-trailer on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, killing the bus driver and injuring more than 50 passengers. On May 31, a bus from Charlotte, N.C., careened off Interstate 95 in Caroline County, killing four people and injuring two dozen.

I’m 50 years old, African-American, and overweight. I have an MA in English-Creative Writing (since 2003) and experience as a clerical/office worker in the publishing and music fields, and as a tutor/teacher (non-accredited) in higher education. I had bad experiences with employment agencies in my 20s in the 1970s when I had a BA (in journalism), and later I read about how racist they are. Have things changed? I need to make more money, but I’m gunshy about employment agencies.
You should make good use of your academic credentials and your experience in the education field. Since you are worried about “race” and “age”, why not become an online tutor. Then you won’t have to meet face-to-face with anyone. Your work hours will be flexible. Anf you’ll have a worlwide market of potential students.
