Alaska fishing 'best bets' for July
In general, king salmon fishing has peaked at most Southcentral fisheries, and will continue to drop off in the next couple of weeks. Not that it’s been all that great this year, except for a few rivers like Ship Creek (good, but late, run), the Deshka, and the Kasilof.
Ship Creek will continue to produce more fish, as it appears this run was a little late in arriving. The Kasilof and Kenai rivers (see my Kasilof fishing video below, or check out the original link here ) will have a second run of kings, beginning in early July, which will be a nice shot in the arm. But in the meantime, ADF&G has announced in an Emergency Order that it will restrict the catching of early-run king salmon in the Kenai River until mid-July. The run is well below average, officials say.
In Southeast , that little fishery I talked about for steelhead in my very first “Best Bets” column , the Ward Lake system, has great rainbow fishing just eight miles north of Ketchikan. Easy to wade and sight fish, this is a favorite place for locals. But locals will tell you that even though you are allowed to keep 2 rainbow or cutthroat trout daily -- with an 11‑inch minimum and 22-inch maximum size limit -- they practice “catch & release” to preserve this fragile fishery.
Back in Southcentral on the saltwater, halibut fishing continues to heat up in both Homer and Seward. The winner of the halibut derby in Seward is Long Grove, Iowa resident Scott Cawiezell’s 247-pound fish caught aboard the ProFish-n-Sea with Capt. Woody Wedin. That derby ended June 30.
In my hometown at The End Of The Road, where the Homer Jackpot Derby runs through September 30, Chad Aldridge of Soldotna, AK caught his derby-leading barn door halibut on Father's Day. At 350.8 pounds, it will be a hard fish to beat. Since the derby began in 1986, only five first-place halibut have weighed more.
Most lingcod fisheries open on July 1. These voracious fish are a blast to catch, but in most Southcentral waters you have to burn some serious fuel to get to good locations for them. In Seward, you cannot retain lingcod in Resurrection Bay -- you have to get all the way out into the Gulf. In Homer, the best fishing for lingcod is at the bottom of the Kenai Peninsula, in the Chugach Islands area .

For those of you unfamiliar with fly fishing, it is a type of fishing in which you use an artificial fly as your bait to catch fish. Fly fishing dates back to the second century and has been used in various countries including the United States, Great Britain, Japan, and Australia just to name a few.
The fly is cast using a fly rod, reel, and weighted line. Casting this almost-weightless fly requires a special type of technique. And techniques vary depending on the type of habitat you are fishing in. You can fly fish in either fresh or salt water.
The tour comes with your very own Alaska fishing guide who can help you find the best places to fish, all necessary fishing gear (no having to pack a ton of equipment and the kitchen sink), a lunch and refreshments, and your round-trip flight from Anchorage.
If this sounds fun, let us know and we’ll hook you up with some other great things to do in Anchorage like taking your Alaska RV rental to a state park for some camping. Enjoy your Alaska vacation.
