Chicago Baseball Legends Help Promote the BP Crosstown Cup

CHICAGO -- Although neither Chicago baseball team owns a winning record as of today, BP Products North America Inc. provided plenty for fans to cheer about this weekend. For the second time, the company sponsored the BP Crosstown Cup, a 15-pound trophy that honors the victor of the interleague series played annually between the Chicago Cubs and White Sox. The White Sox won two of the first three games played this season; another three-game showdown is set to begin at Wrigley Field this Friday.

On Saturday, BP welcomed a legend from each team to its BP Crosstown Cup Fan Zone, an exhibit that took place at the Taste of Chicago event. Signing autographs were former Cub Andre "The Hawk" Dawson, a member of the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame, and former White Sox player Ron Kittle, who won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1983 and slugged 176 homeruns during his 10-year career. Fans also had the chance to sign Chicago's largest baseball, standing at 13 feet tall.

In conjunction with the Crosstown Cup, BP has also set up a digital platform, at www.BPLittleThings.com, which asks Cubs and White Sox fans to share one little thing that makes Chicago baseball special to them. A select number of entries will be displayed on advertisements to be placed throughout the city. In addition, BP added an instant-win game that will award 50,000 prizes. Customers who fill up with 10 or more gallons of BP gasoline with Invigorate can request an instant-win scratch-off card.

BP gas storage farm annexed into Elk Grove — Elk Grove Village ...

A 35-acre “gas tank farm” operated by BP Products North America at the corner of Touhy Avenue and Elmhurst Road is now officially part of Elk Grove Village.

The village has recently annexed the property into its fold, a move Mayor Craig Johnson called “a positive thing for Elk Grove Village.”

The community will gain an undetermined amount of property tax revenues as a result of the annexation agreement, which approved June 21 by the village board, though likely not sales taxes or other revenue, said Matt Roan, deputy village manager.

In turn, BP Products will gain a water connection for its fire suppression system to upgrade water pressure, Roan said. The property has been served by a well.

Elk Grove Village’s fire and police departments already are first-responders to the property for any emergencies, though Johnson said the village “never had any problems” there.

The “farm” houses about a dozen gas storage tanks, and Roan said BP refers to the site as a “gas station for gas stations,” where fuel is loaded into tanker trucks for local deliveries. The site also provides fuel for O’Hare International Airport, said Brad Krabel, right-of-way agent for BP Products.

BP Products is looking at adding three tanks more in the future, “depending on market conditions,” Krabel said.

During the board discussion, Trustee Jeffrey Franke noted that one of the tanks BP is considering adding on the Elmhurst Road side seems pretty close to the roadway. He asked what protection there will be if someone veers off the road.

Krabel said there is a perimeter fence on the property, and dike walls surround every tank for spillage and protection.

In order to allow the annexation, the village board also had to approve a special use for a petroleum storage facility in the industrial zone and waived requirements that limit the height of the tanks to 65 feet.

The tank storage facility that operated on that site for more than 50 years, Johnson said.
