It’s time to curb your enthusiasm
John Coughlin reckons he is going to have to curb his enthusiasm from the East Stirlingshire dug out this season.
The new Shire coach is starting to shape a squad for the coming season in full knowledge the majority of his players will be youngsters looking for a break in the senior game.
The situation is different for a coach who has been used to winning promotion everywhere he has been in the senior game and he fully acknowledges that he will have to take a more relaxed approach to the game from that which he has been used to.
“I am a winner and I love winning more than anything else in football,” he said. “But the situation we find ourselves in this season means I can’t go on bawling and shouting from the dug out.
“We will have to go primarily with young kids and what they need more than me going off my head is some encouragement. I know there will be some hard times ahead during the season and we have to offer as much support as we can as coaches rather than pick faults if things go wrong.”
Coughlin has managed to persuade a number of last season’s players to sign on with keeper Gavin Sorley, Ryan Wilkie and teenage stars Steven Jackson and Craig Scott having already having penned new contracts.
Stuart Beveridge and Fraser Team are also expected to sign on again and there will be new faces with two players verbally agreeing deals.
“People say it will be difficult to attract players to the club under the financial restraints that are being implemented,” he said.
“But it is a great opportunity for good young players to come here and try and make a name for themselves.
“The one thing I have been trying to impress upon them is that there is absolutely no pressure here.
“They can come and play the game, enjoy their football without the fans getting on their backs and with no fear of failure because people are not expecting a lot from us,” said the Shire boss.
