Huntsville hair stylist gives customer rainbow-colored locks

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Catherine Shearer woke up Monday morning with her regular salt-and-pepper long locks.

By the afternoon, Rainbow Brite had paid her a visit.

The Happy Tummy owner’s rather simple mane was transformed in five hours into a more elaborate and kaleidoscopic coiffure -- rainbow hair in seven different hues.

Noel Martin , the 28-year-old hair stylist and makeup artist responsible, decided to try the coloring feat after seeing a post on reddit.com by a woman who donned the colorful ‘do.

“I really wanted to try it,” said Martin, who works at Salon Allure . “As a colorist, it would be the ultimate challenge.”

About a month ago, Martin created a post on her Facebook page requesting hair models for her extreme rainbow experiment. After receiving a wealth of replies from interested guinea pigs, Martin selected the best candidate based upon hair qualities such as thickness and texture. She also wanted to wait until June for the project to coincide with Pride Month.

“She (Shearer) was like ‘I will do it,’” Martin said. “(She said) I don’t have to worry about my boss yelling at me.”

The tedious and meticulous project began at 11 a.m. Monday in Salon Allure with Martin decolorizing -- also known as bleaching -- Shearer’s hair into a blank canvas. Using a free-hand technique, Martin sectioned and twisted the hair, and then applied the colors -- she used blue, green, purple, fuschia, red, orange and yellow -- one by one.

Note that before Martin applied the color, she applied a conditioning treatment to Shearer’s hair for a healthy and shiny glow.

Using cold water, Martin rinsed out each color and then used a demi-permanent clear coat to preserve the electrifying hues and to prevent each color from bleeding into one another.

“It should last a couple of months,” Martin said. “I recommend a color-safe shampoo by Pureology.”

The cost of the products and color by Pravana Chromasilk Vivids -- the brand that just so happens to be hosting an upcoming hair-coloring contest -- amounted to $75. But the price Martin will charge for the head-turning dye job more than doubles the initial cost -- totaling $250.

“It’s a lot of time and work,” she said.

As of now, Martin and Shearer are discussing the possibility of one more iconic hair dye.
