Nigeria: A Youth Roots for Coconut Tourism in Badagry
Opinion
For many decades, Coconut was produced in Nigeria for human consumption although it is one of the economic legacies in some countries of the world. Now Nigeria is becoming conscious of its economic importance and is joining the rest of the world to celebrate coconut for tourisms.
While oil producing countries in the world are on the roundtable discussing price regulation on, little did they know that over 120 by products can be extracted from the coconut.
For its economic importance gave birth to the National Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) that was established in 1964 by the Federal Government, then, under the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to aid the coconut industry and other palm families. This was done to improve the potentials of the crop and to develop the perfect way to control the pest and disease that have affected its growth. Coconut is the chief cash crop in Lagos State where 30,000 families who are farmers use it as source of livelihood.
Its economic importance prompted the maiden coconut festivals in 2009 which has turned Badagry into the economic honey pot.
This was after 1876 that the Catholic Mission established coconut plantation in Topo Badagry only for Dohetu Messi , the president of Gunuvi Heritage to bring into consciousness to the people of Badagry, its economic importance.
The coconut belt of Lagos spans over 180 km from Seme border through Badagry, Ojo, Amuwo, Eti Osa to Ibeju Lekki. And is found naturally growing in 20 states along the upland, creek and swamp in the delta sleeves of Lagos, Ogun, Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom Cross River states among others.
The birth of Gunuvi Heritage, an entertainment outfit that organises coconut festivals annually may not have been a success without vision and determination of the young lad, Messi, a native of Badagry , who holds Higher National Diploma in Geology from the Federal Polytechnic Ado Ekiti and Masters degree from Federal University of Technical Akure, also in Engineering Geology.
In a chat with Sunday Champion , Messi said he went into research on the Internet and reading extensively, only to discovered that his dream and vision were in line with the thinking of countries that had engaged in coconut festivals for many decades , such as Malaysia, Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Jamaica among others.
This, according to him, encouraged him hence would want Nigeria to be known just like these other countries Despite the fact that he wants Nigeria to be listed among the few countries that celebrate coconut festivals , he also wants coconut festivals to be celebrated locally just as we celebrate new yam festival in the Eastern region , Ojude Oba in Ijebu Ode, Osun Osogbo and Arugungu are well known that attracts tourists from all over the world.

Current plans for the development of the Inga 3 project entail drilling up to 70km of tunnels into rock formations the geology of which is not well known, and only drawing a maximum of 3500 MW of power. AfDB energy and environment director Hela
Plenty of independent producers have gone bankrupt because they kept drilling with the hope that, eventually, prices would become sufficiently "reasonable" to cover their finding costs, which were a lot higher than finding costs in Canada or Nigeria.
As is the case with a similar extension approved for JDZ Block 2 last month, this JDA action is subject to final approval by the Nigeria-Sao Tome & Principe Joint Ministerial Council. Given our recent change in valuation, it would appear that some of
