June 28, 2011: 2011 Texas Comic-Con Review

Fellow Superman fan and contributing writer for the Superman Super Site, Jim Hanulik had an opportunity to travel to the 2011 Texas Comic-Con and has filed the following report:

The Texas Comic-Con was held this past weekend, June 24-26, at The San Antonio Event Center. I attended on Saturday and drove the 17 miles to enjoy the day and on a mission for my son to get Sam Witwer's autograph on a cast photo of "Being Human". Sam's would be the third and final cast member to sign this for Ryan. I got there twenty minutes from the scheduled opening of 10am but doors opened at 10:10am and I made it through thirty minutes later. One person was collecting the $15 entrance fee and he was still there at 2pm as the lines to enter were steady.

I entered into the large convention center filled with vendors, gamers, costumers, artists, celebrities and fans of all ages. One young man was holding a sign above his head that said "Free Hug" and this was actually working (note to self for future cons). I made a quick walk around to see what was where and then headed to stand in Sam's line. He recognized me and I told him we had met several years ago in Cleveland and last year in Metropolis, Il at the annual Superman Celebration. He was very engaging and I then told him of my mission and handed him the photo for his signature. He laughed at Sam Huntington's comment "Grrr Wolf" and he wrote "Stay Clean, Bagged Blood Only". I then asked for a picture of him holding the cast photo for verification for my son. The other fans in line were laughing at that request.

I then made my way over to Margot Kidder, aka Lois Lane from the Chris Reeve Superman movies. I had a photo of her and Noel Neill (Lois Lane) in an embrace which Noel had already autographed. She asked me where this was taken and I told her it was from 2005 in Metropolis and she was beaming. I also had her autograph a picture of her with Christopher Reeve from the Academy Awards in which she replied "Look how young we were". She also commented how she was not given favorable reviews for the dress she wore.

I also had several other pictures from my collection that she looked through and she commented on the one of her meeting Princess Dianna. Mariel Hemingway was standing to her left and Mark Pillow (Nuclear Man from "Superman: IV") was to her right wearing his costume from the movie.

Born on November 22, 1961 in Mill Valley, Idaho.

The granddaughter of celebrated author Ernest Hemingway, Mariel began her career in the shadow of her two famous relatives: her grandfather and her older sister, model/actress Margaux Hemingway.

In 1976, Mariel took a supporting role in her sister's first starring vehicle, Lipstick. Within a few years, Margaux was out of the movie-star race, but Mariel had only just begun.

She next starred as Woody Allen's teenaged lover in Manhattan in 1979, a role that earned her an Oscar nomination. She followed this triumph with the risky roles of a lesbian athlete in Personal Best and the unfortunate Playboy centerfold Dorothy Stratten in 1983's Star 80.

For the latter, she underwent highly publicized cosmetic surgery and breast enhancement. These headlines were followed by a controversial nude scene in an episode of the TV lawyer series Civil Wars.

Though her acting career continues, Mariel has followed other pursuits of late. She was the executive producer for The Suicide Club and is currently directing her first film, A Moveable Feast, based on her grandfather's acclaimed novel.

In addition, she runs a yoga studio in Sun Valley, Idaho, and has plans to publish her memoirs in early 2003.

She is married to filmmaker and restaurateur Steven Douglas Crisman.
