Almost fireworks-free, these events still promise a fabulous Fourth
Fireworks are restricted to the professionals, but Fourth of July celebrations on tap for next Monday in Examiner communities will feature plenty of red, white and blue, patriotic parades and traditional fare. Here are some ways to mark America’s birthday in your own neighborhoods:
Memorial VillagesThe 19th annual Village Independence Festival will be held on Saturday, focusing on family, neighbors and patriotism.
The free event kicks off with a parade at 9 a.m. from Memorial Church of Christ, 900 Echo Lane to the Memorial Drive Baptist Church grounds at 325 N. Piney Point Road, site of the festival.
Parade participants may ride in their decorated cars, on bicycles or skates, or in wagons.
The parade is followed by games, food and entertainment through 1 p.m.
Bellaire“My Country, ’Tis of Thee” is the theme for the city’s annual parade and festival, with the parade launching at 9:30 a.m. Monday and the festival running from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
The main parade forms at the Bellaire Triangle and travels east on Bellaire Boulevard where it jogs south onto South Rice Avenue. That’s where the children’s parade jumps in to lead the procession from the Community National Bank parking lot. Youngsters and families wanting to participate should show up by 9 a.m. with their bikes, trikes, wagons and strollers — and plenty of liquids.
The festival begins immediately after the parade in Bellaire Town Square, 7008 S. Rice Ave. Entertainment is free, but there’s a charge for carnival games, a mini-ferris wheel, petting zoo, dunk tank, inflatable activities and food. City Hall will be open for cooling.

The Bellaire Family Aquatic Center pools will be open from 10:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. on the Fourth, with the two pools at Evergreen Park open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.
West UniversityThe city of West University Place Parks and Recreation Department will host its annual Independence Day Bike Parade and Pool Party Monday.
Parade participants should line up in front of West U. Elementary, 3736 University Blvd., by 9:45a.m . Kids and parents alike are encouraged to decorate their bicycles, tricycles, wagons, and strollers.
The Bike Parade will begin sharply at 10 a.m.. The parade route will continue west on University, turn south on Academy, and then proceed west on Byron to Colonial Park Pool.
After the parade, fun, family festivities and games will continue with free admission to Colonial Park Pool, 4130 Byron St., from 10am to 6 p.m. West U Rotary will hold their annual BBQ fundraiser, and a suggested donation of $5 will buy a brisket plate.
