Weird Al Yankovic – Alpocalypse Review [2]
Almost five years since his last album, Straight Outta Lynwood , Weird Al Yankovic returns with a mix of songs previously released online on Youtube and as part of his Internet Leaks EP and some new, unheard tracks. As always, it’s a mix of straight parody songs, a polka mix, and stylistic parody original songs by Yankovic. It’s a format that works extremely well and makes Alpocalypse another great addition to Yankovic’s discography. Part of Weird Al’s charm and appeal is how he manages to capture the culture of the moment, summing up the preceding few years into one succinct album. Here, he tackles Lady Gaga, TMZ and celebrity stalker culture, various internet topics, the economy, CIA scandals, and the Chuck Norris meme, some with more venom than others. His goal is less to make a point often than amuse and, often, he does both at the same time. The lead single and first song, “Perform this Way” takes Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way” and turns it around on her, much like Weird Al’s “Smells like Nirvana” did to the ‘90s grunge band. He’s not saying anything that anyone with half a brain hasn’t figured out, but taking Gaga’s own song and turning it into a long rumination on her calculated approach to performance and shocking the audience and general public definitely makes it the most entertaining instance of someone feeling the need to point out that Gaga is trying to be weird. The take-off on Taylor Swift’s “You Belong to Me,” “TMZ” takes that sweet teenage crush song that borders on creepy stalker behavior and turns it into a song actually about creepy stalker behavior. It’s a clever and subtle shift of subject matter that reflects the pattern of the song, beginning by pointing out how intrusive and annoying entertainment ‘journalists’ and paparazzi are with their following celebrities around and obsessing over every little thing they do, feeling the need to make sure everyone knows that some C-list star walked their dog this morning or that so-and-so went out to a club and actually, GASP!, imbibed an alcoholic beverage! Towards the end, Yankovic reminds us that he’s smarter than a simple attack on TMZ and its kin by escalating the celebrity behavior to such ludicrous (and true) heights that we’re reminded that celebrities play into the game or are aware that this happens and still do incredibly stupid things in public.Weird Al Discography - News

Yankovic's song is flawless in its lampoon of the somewhat creepy crooner. Not only is the imagery spot-on, but the song itself is pretty entertaining-parody or not. Weird Al can proudly add another entry to his long discography of parodies.

I'm in the second half, because in a discography full of excellent songs, “Living Boy” is the most excellent. 31. “The Afterlife,” which quotes the Everly Brothers' “Be Bop a Lula,” and “Questions for the Angels,” are both awful, awful songs. 32.

It was a great set, studded with highlights from the group's relatively short discography to date, though it arguably never got going quite as it could have (I'm sure they were a bit more banter-y first time round).
