Fake Sword Fights Provide Real Thrills
The sword fights were fake, but the flinches—and occasional screams —of the kids in the front row were very real Thursday at the Brentwood Library.
A sword-fighting stunt team from Tigertainment Studios demonstrated face-to-face battles using swords from various historical periods. The exhibitions was part of the library’s Teen Summer Reading Program.
“Do not do this at home,” stuntman Michael John told the kids in attendance. “We are trained professionals and these fights are all choreographed ahead of time.”
John, along with his wife and stunt partner, Nancy John, took the kids on a journey through time by showing them the weapons popular during different eras. The couple demonstrated various fighting techniques and then revealed how to create the optical illusions involved in making the moves look real on stage or in front of a camera.
“We make it look like we’re swinging at full force, but we’re not,” Michael John said.
The kids and their parents appeared engaged during the show, with the mostly female audience rooting for Nancy to win each fight.
“I liked the fake sword fights and how they made the noises and made it look real,” said Keilah Matthews, 10. “I also liked that the guy lost most of the time.”
Library officials declared the swordplay program a success.
“It was one of the best programs we’ve had here at the library because of the entertainment quality that the performers brought,” said young adult librarian Drue Mees. “It was also very educational and I think the kids learned a lot.”
After the demonstrations, the kids were invited to hold the different types of swords and were shown how to handle them safely.
“I held all three of the swords and it was very cool,” Keilah said. “I felt like I was in medieval times.”
