FENTON TOWNSHIP, Michigan — Adopt-A-Pet of Fenton wants to expand its shelter to more than double its capacity to house unwanted pets.

The nonprofit animal rescue group already has raised about $62,000, but needs another $120,000 for the expansion, slated to begin in August.

The proposed addition to the facility’s dog building would have eight rooms, making separate spaces for a whelping room for nursing mother dogs, a training/socialization room, an adoption/counseling space and quarantine rooms.

It also would allow the facility to increase the number of animals it can accept. Now the 5,000 square-foot building is limited to housing four adult dogs and two litters of puppies. With the addition, it could hold 15 adult dogs and five litters of puppies.

“There’s so many animals that we have to turn down everyday. We’re very eager to get started,” said Program Director Jody Maddock.

The group also houses dogs and cats in about 20 volunteer foster homes.

Adopt-A-Pet, which has been operating for more than 30 years, moved to its Fenton Township facility four years ago from its former shelter, a small house downtown Fenton.

The animal rescue group has an annual budget of $200,000. Last year, it found homes for more than 624 dogs and cats.

Maddock said there has been a huge increase in the number of pets Adopt-A-Pet has received in the last three to four years.

Many people are moving because of the economy and can’t take their pets with them or aren’t able to afford them, she said.

The group also takes in adoptable animals from other shelters who are in danger of being euthanized.

“A lot of these people (seeking to drop off pets) have waited until the last minute. And if we’re full that only leaves them animal control and if they’re full, they have to euthanize,” Maddock said.

If Adopt-A-Pet can’t take an animal in, it refers pet owners to other area organizations, including the Humane Society of Genesee County, but like Adopt-A-Pet, it also can be full.
