P Gunasegaram, I wish to say that MAS should not compete with Airasia head-to-head on pricing. I wish to say that MAS is a fully fledged airlines and it is a Skytrax 5-star airlines. If MAS play to the game of Airasia, the former tend to lose out. As Airasia is a low cost airlines, bare essentials, no-frills – you pay what you get. Meanwhile, MAS are fully fledged, 5-star airlines offering services beyond the expectation of customers. This means MAS have to differentiate themselves from Airasia. MAS should stick to what they could do best – premium service, meal on board, free luggage allowance, no-hassle transit, on-board entertainment, or even complimentary Ferrero Rocher chocolate. Airasia with cunning cost management can disregard many services offered by MAS like meal, free luggage but demanding a customer to pay a premium for using any additional services. Even Airasia is aggressive to test market demand like offering dirt cheap airfare to new destination but eventually cancel the ticket at the expense of customers without notice. MAS on the other hand is not free to cancel the ticket because of its commitment to offer service beyond expectations. I could even recall my flight back to KL from Sydney that was half empty. Some passengers could even sleep on the seats meant to accommodate 4 passengers. This shows that MAS do not have sufficient load factor and where on earth MAS could get the passengers. By joining Oneworld alliance. However by joining Oneworld alliance, there might be certain conditions that MAS might need to meet like operating unprofitable routes, but things should get better once the economy conditions improve. One of the benefits MAS joining Oneworld is collaboration on common routes with alliance members. Put this scenario, passengers who want to travel Sydney – KL – London on board Qantas from Sydney, then transit in KL onboard MAS to London. Another scenario is passengers who travel KL – Christchurch onboard MAS from KL to Sydney, and in onboard Qantas from Sydney onwards to Christchurch. This free MAS the hassle of operating directly from KL – Christchurch which has lower load factor. 8 daily flights to Jakarta. Maybe MAS to increase the frequencies to Jakarta beyond 8 daily flights, or add new destinations like Vientianne, Luang Prabang, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Da Nang, Hue, Padang, Palembang, Bandung, Solo, Balikpapan, Manado, Lombok, Dili, or Davao.
