Confession meets joy for Cash

WITH HER HITS Seven Year Ache and I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me, and searing confessional concept records like Interiors and The Wheel, it wouldn’t be readily apparent that a Rosanne Cash concert would be a barrel of laughs.

But when the Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, author and eldest daughter of country legend Johnny Cash avers that she and guitarist husband John Leventhal are "the George and Gracie of the folk-rock world" it’s best to take a statement like that at face value.

Not that Cash and Leventhal rehearse their snappy patter or do a little soft shoe a la George Burns and Gracie Allen (for those under a certain age, go check YouTube), but when the pair takes to the stage of Halifax’s Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on Wednesday night, the audience should get a good feel for the relaxed, easygoing nature of their relationship.

"It is intimate, but that’s not to say it’s lacking in energy or definition," says Cash over the phone from their home in New York. "We love doing this together, we do this show a lot, and it’s incredibly satisfying.

"I think people might expect something a little more milquetoast or a little more folky, since it is an acoustic duo, but John can sound like a whole band with one guitar, it’s pretty remarkable."

Her husband’s versatility will come in handy for a show that has a 30-year career to draw from. Until recently, a large part of their performance centered on Cash’s latest Grammy-nominated album The List, but now she says they’re doing more of a retrospective kind of show following the release of The Essential Rosanne Cash compilation on her 56th birthday on May 24.

The result is a look back at a rich catalogue of material, and a talent that grows in leaps and bounds with each release, expanding beyond the confines of the commercial country music environment that first nurtured her. Whatever songs she and Leventhal opt to do, it’ll be a setlist that most artists would envy.

"And it’s long," she chuckles.

"We just put back in the set John Hiatt’s It Hasn’t Happened Yet, which I recorded back in 1982, and it’s such a great song. I haven’t performed that in 20 years, and it’s so much fun. I’ll definitely do it in Halifax."

One tune that would be perfect for Wednesday’s concert is I’m Movin’ On, by Nova Scotia native Hank Snow. Cash gives the Brooklyn-born star’s signature song a sultry makeover on The List, a collection of 12 landmark country and folk tunes culled from a tally of 100 assembled for her by her late father.
