Exotic Canada: Edmonton beyond the mall
By Craille Maguire Gillies
Hours from the Rocky Mountains, Canada’s most northern metropolis might seem like a place with only one destination: West Edmonton Mall. And it’s true, many visitors make a beeline for this consumer palace, so vast that it has its own postal code and too many of the “world’s biggest” attractions to mention (the indoor lake and indoor triple loop roller coaster come to mind).
But there’s life here outside the mall, and the trick to experiencing the best of the city — beyond the requisite GPS system to navigate its ornate system of one-way bridges and streets — is to know where to go. Ignore the scenery on your grim ride from the airport, down a highway littered with big box stores. Soon you’ll arrive in Old Strathcona, a pretty residential neighbourhood with homey Whyte Avenue as its main artery. If it’s a Saturday, swing by the busy indoor Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market — if only for the fresh kettlecorn that a street vendor pops up in huge pots outside.
On Whyte Avenue itself you’ll find homegrown fashion boutiques such as The Bamboo Ballroom and shoe emporium Gravity Pope, where owner Louise Dirks has been enabling shoe addictions for more than 20 years. (Gravity Pope also has an airy Euro-style clothing store on Gateway Boulevard, along with outposts in Vancouver and Calgary.)
Despite a fixer-upper spirit, there are small pleasures to be found across the river in Edmonton’s downtown, threaded along Jasper Avenue. For shopping, head to 29 Armstrong, a quirky design shop in an airy warehouse space that is outfitted with kitschy finds, antiques creatively displayed and modern pieces by such designers as Toronto’s Gus* Design Group and local artists Loyal Loot Collective.
Drinking At night, Strathcona’s bars fill up with rowdy university kids and live music — Blues on Whyte is an institution — but you’re just as well grabbing a craft beer at The SugarBowl (Belgium and Quebec brands dominant the lengthy menu) and settling in on the patio to watch a summer lightning storm rip across the Prairie sky. Coffee aficionados should head a few streets over to Leva Café for a strong espresso and some of the best gelato in town.
If you’re craving something stronger, the stamp-sized Tzin Wine Bar on 104 Street downtown is an intimate spot (there are about two dozen seats), with a solid wine list and tapas to match.

Coming up on 700 meters, Peter Corrigan decided to do something about the leisurely pace and surged into the lead. Reacting to the move, Milne abandoned his spot behind Brannen to chase Corrigan. Brannen swung out from the pole to follow Milne. Brannen was still stalking Milne going into the last lap when Milne moved into the lead. Geoff Martinson followed the two around the track. 150 meters out, Brannen attacked. Milne fought back, but on the homestretch Brannen inched ahead, beating Milne 3:50.33 to 3:50.40. Martinson trailed in third at 3:50.74.
