Soon vaccinated against hay fever?
Runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing … Every year at the same time, hay fever you life a living hell. But all this could disappear tomorrow with a vaccine tested in the United States. Six injections would be sufficient to reduce symptoms by 60% for at least two years!
Researchers at Johns Hopkins Medical University have successfully used a DNA-based vaccine against hay fever requiring only six injections. This medicine can reduce 60% ??of allergy symptoms and this, for at least two years!
Direct the immune response
Broadly, our immune system protects us against infections (bacteria, viruses, parasites …). The first line of defense rests in part on dendritic cells responsible for alerting the intruder as a function of the Th1 or Th2 cells. Th1 cells are biased against viruses, bacteria and abnormal cells, Th2 cells respond to the presence of an allergen by producing specific antibodies (IgE baptized). But in allergic patients, this reaction is inappropriate and leads to chronic inflammation, causing hay fever, asthma and other allergic problems.
In allergic individuals, one solution would be to favor Th1 cell response and suppress Th2 cell response. Developed by Dynavax laboratory, a fraction of DNA called ISS is able to achieve this feat. The coupling of an allergen with this molecule could then reprogram the immune system. Through the production of “memory Th1 cells,” the effect of this re-programming could continue. The principle of anti-allergy vaccine is born, it was still necessary to demonstrate clinical efficacy.
A 60% reduction of allergy symptoms
Researchers at Johns Hopkins Medical University (Baltimore) tested the vaccine in 25 people allergic to ragweed (14 receiving six weekly injections of true vaccine and 11 placebo).
After a year and therefore an allergy season, those vaccinated had a 60% reduction of allergy symptoms (runny or stuffy nose, watery eyes and sneezing …). The results persisted even during the second year, without any further injection had been performed. The number of people remaining in the study beyond this period can not determine the duration of this protective effect
A very promising technique
Several studies involving many patients are allergic currently conducted by the laboratory Dynavax.
