Volunteers from NL assisting Red Cross in Western Canada
The Canadian Red Cross has sent at least 30 disaster relief volunteers from Atlantic Canada to Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta this spring and early summer. Five have left this province for Western Canada’s wildfire and flood areas.
The five volunteers are: Joan Bessey of St. John's, Joe Cleary of Placentia, Bernie Healy of Grand Falls-Windsor, Eileen McCann of South River and Gerald Scott of Corner Brook.
As with the other Atlantic Canadians being brought in to assist, the five from Newfoundland and Labrador will be helping to manage shelters for the thousands who have been forced to evacuate their homes and filling other roles as required, in order to give their counterparts in Western Canada a break from weeks of non-stop work, according to a news release by the Canadian Red Cross.
“In Alberta, close to 16,000 people have been evacuated at some point, with the worst-hit areas in and around the town of Slave Lake, where hundreds of homes were destroyed by wildfires and several thousand people remain displaced. About 2,600 are still being sheltered with Canadian Red Cross support in communities up to 300 kilometres away such as Edmonton and Peace River,” the Red Cross states.
“In Saskatchewan, Red Cross teams are helping track and maintain contact with evacuees forest fires in the north and current flooding in the south, and are supporting shelters in cities such as Weyburn and Estevan. In Manitoba, floods have forced more than 5,000 people to evacuate and the Red Cross is active in more than 30 communities, tracking evacuees and their emergency needs, supporting shelters and distributing clean-up kits to those who return home.”

It is mentally frustrating to push myself so hard and reach such a minimum distance. I know how much a 10kl takes out of me. I know how much a 1/2 marathon takes out of me. I know how much a marathon a day after a 1/2 marathon takes out of me. However I am having the biggest challenge getting used to this wind. It's like running with an extra me on my back.
