Heat Lightning

Q: What is heat lightning?

A:  Heat lightning can be a misleading term because heat doesn’t have much to do with it, says Brent McRoberts of Texas A&M University. “Heat lightning is just lightning that is so far away that you can’t hear the thunder that goes with it,” McRoberts explains. “Since the storm is so far away that the thunder can’t be heard, the flash in the sky that we see has been given a special name, and it’s heat lightning. It is not a different form of lightning.”

Q: Why is it called heat lightning?

A: Probably because this kind of lightning is usually observed during hot and humid summer nights after the intense daytime heating has produced thunderstorms, McRoberts adds. “The term is a little misleading because it has nothing to do with the heat of the lightning itself,” he says. “At night, we can see the flashes of lightning from very far distances, up to 100 miles. But the sound doesn’t carry nearly that far. So down through the years, when we see the lightning but can’t hear the thunder, the term heat lightning has been applied to it.”
