For one contestant, it was a "full-body burn."

As another explained it, "You really know how a dog feels on a short lease."

The easy part of a full-body burn test taken by Becky Price, Brad Shamhart and other doggedly determined competitors at Saturday's Klamath Freedom Celebration involved being fitted into a harness attached to a pickup truck.

The tough part was trying to gain traction while running in slow motion and tugging the truck, with driver, 100 feet down the track.

"It's heavy. It takes a lot of training, a lot of hard work," explained Shamhart, 21, after his full-body burn. "That was great."

"It's like pretty much nothing you've done before," said Price. "When you start out you feel like a mired dog."

While Shamhart and most of the competitors were young with rippling, bulging muscles, the 48-year-old Price is small enough - she stands 4-foot-9-1/2 and weighs 140 pounds - that she sometimes competes as the "Mighty Leprechaun."

Price, who moved to the Keno area to live with family after a 23-year career with the Air Force as a flight medic, joins others at the gym for general strength workouts. At home, she also uses short railroad ties to train for events like the farmer's carry and tows tractor tires to mimic the pulling events.

"It's been a long day. I'm tired. I'm glad it's over," Price said, adding with a grin, "And I'm looking forward to next year."

The Klamath County Fairgrounds, site of the ongoing Klamath Freedom Celebration, was like a three-ring circus.

Gaily dressed Klamath Indian dancers showed their stuff to the sounds of recorded drumming. Throbbing hard rock psyched Becky Price and others in the truck towing competition. Inside the fairgrounds hall, the Smokin'Guns pounded out rock ‘n roll favorites - Elton's John's "Crocodile Rock" and the Doobie Brothers' "China Grove."
