The Old Spice Guy loves Canada (or our women, at least)

In his pitches for Old Spice, Mustafa is typically clad only in a towel or tight trousers, but on this occasion he is also wearing jeans, Converse sneakers and a full beard. When the brief introduction mentions that Toronto was ranked second in PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ annual Cities of Opportunity rankings, Mustafa picks up on the fact, clearly aiming to seduce the crowd.

“You said second [among] cities of opportunity? Well, the female welcoming committee that you sent last night said it was first. Oh, you guys didn’t send that committee? It was someone else?” Laughter all around.

Mustafa, 37, certainly is comfortable in his own skin, which is a good thing, as it’s frequently on display. Since he first appeared as The Man Your Man Could Smell Like in Old Spice’s extremely successful TV spots, the image of his sculpted body has become ingrained in popular culture. The first ad, aired during the 2010 Super Bowl, has been viewed more than 33 million times on YouTube. The campaign it launched – a hit with both men and women – has helped reinvigorate a brand previously associated with grandfathers.

Noting, during an interview on the boat, that his character lampoons the stereotype of the manly yet sensitive male – “Ladies, do you want a man who smells like he can bake you a gourmet cake in the dream kitchen he built for you with his own hands?” he asks in one ad – Mustafa also feels that the persona “makes it real. It makes that image available.” He may be on to something.

Reggie Tan, 29, is also aboard the Kajama. A staffer at the Gotstyle men’s wear store in Toronto, he says that he likes “the idea of the Old Spice guy” because he reminds men of “the way we should be” but uses humour to get the message across. While guys bust up at all the faux posturing, the notion that “we should be giving a crap about our appearance, about the way we talk to women” also sinks in. “It’s the whole idea of take care of yourself and ladies will like you,” Tan sums up.

It’s pretty obvious that jeans look great on skinny women. If you wear a size 0, 2 or 4, almost any pair of jeans will look great on you. If you’re a bit bigger, maybe size 8 or 10, you should probably stay away from some types of women’s jeans, such as skin tight jeans and skinny jeans, but for the most part, you are going to look curvy and sexy in a pair of jeans that fit well.

But what if you’re even bigger? What if you’re a plus size woman? Can you still wear jeans?

Of course you can. Being a bigger woman doesn’t mean you should give up the ease and convenience of wearing denim.

However, there are a few tips you should follow if you want to look good in your plus size women’s jeans:

1. Don’t wear baggy jeans. While you may feel “safer” in baggy jeans, because they hide your figure, wearing baggy jeans will only make you look bigger. It’s just like wearing a tent dress – those may look cute on twiggy-like girls, but if you’re bigger, they make you look huge! Don’t be afraid to buy jeans that are form fitting and hug your body. Those are the most flattering.

2. Choose a dark wash. A light wash is tricky – it can visually add inches even to skinny women. But a dark wash creates an illusion of being thinner than you really are. Black jeans are great, as are dark blue jeans. Personally, I would stay away from very light washes and definitely from white denim!

3. Pay a little more for a better cut. Designer jeans are expensive, but they usually offer a higher quality fabric and a better cut. You don’t have to pay $200 for a pair of jeans, though. You can often find quality jeans on denim: they simply won’t flatter you.

4. While you shouldn’t go for baggy jeans, you should also avoid very tight jeans or skinny jeans. Those will most likely emphasize bulges, create a “muffin top,” and make your “problem areas” appear even bigger.

5. Most importantly: buy jeans that fit! Clothes always look best when they fit right, and this is especially true for jeans. If you can’t find a pair that fits, buy the best pair you can find, and have them altered. A well-fitting pair of jeans makes a world of difference in your appearance and in your self-confidence.
