Can You Hear Me Now? Amateur Radio Enthusiasts Gather in Harbor Island Park

The sounds of Morse code and arcane radio chatter filled the bandshell at Harbor Island over the weekend as the local chapter of the American Radio Relay League held a 24-hour Field Day in conjunction with their counterparts in the United States and Canada.

The event consisted of a demonstration of emergency communications and a competition to see who could communicate with as many people during the time period as possible.

Known as ham radio operators—who use short wave, one-to-one connections rather than one-way broadcasting—the group showed off their new $120,000 communications van paid for by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security and operated on behalf of the all-volunteer Westchester Emergency Communications Association.

Though they usually communicate from within their homes to places around the block, around the world and even with astronauts on the International Space Station, club members also provide emergency communications during disasters, including the 2007 flood in Mamaroneck and 9/11.

“I’ve visited every club in the Metro area,” said Joel Miller, who lives in New Jersey and attended the event in Mamaroneck. “In terms of public service, the Westchester group does more than anyone and they’re very technologically savvy,”

Morse Code is still useful because it requires less bandwidth than voice communications, making it a reliable fallback method under difficult circumstances. Ham operators have also launched satellites to aid with their communications.

At Harbor Island, the group set up antennas strung between the light poles in the park and operated equipment powered by a generator and a solar cell throughout the night. Some members camped out and others stayed in a nearby motel.

Though known as a graying hobby, several youngsters were on hand, including a young man earnestly relaying his coordinates: “echo four alpha echo November Yankee, come in.”

Robert Steinberg, who lives in New Rochelle, said that amateur radio, “is like putting a hook in the water and seeing who bites—you never know who is going to show up on the other end.”

To underscore the hobby’s egalitarian nature, he related a story about a truck driver friend of his who connected with someone across the globe and asked with whom he was he was speaking. “I’m the king,” the voice replied. Indeed, it turned out to be King Hussein of Jordan who, before he died in 1999, was known by the handle JY-1.

The best customer reviews 41 of 45 people found this review helpful. Excellent choice by Jamie R. Wilson shopping for an alarm is not really something that adds a lot of research. After all, the common denominator of all the most important: you wake up in time. He had, however, some important features I wanted and not only are all Timex T276B, but more than expected.AUTO-SET. This thing is ready to use right out of the box. It and the time is already set. If not in the EST time zone, simply put in the time zone. Moreover Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving time - so no more worries about forgetting. Also has a calendar of 99 years, which is a backup bonus.BATTERY to. Like most alarm clocks have T276B a battery backup system that saves time and adjustments in the event of a power failure. Unfortunately, save time, you no good if the alarm goes off three AA batteries will T276B is the alarm clock is still without an external power source. This is a big plus as far as I concerned.DUAL ALARM. I'm a bit behind the times in terms of dual alarm clocks, so this is a bonus for me that most people probably already have. What's great if T276B is that you can set each alarm to be active seven days a week, or that it will only operate on weekdays or weekends only. So, no more need to remember to turn off an alarm and activates the other. Each alarm can be set to wake to buzzer, radio or natural sounds.GRADUAL awake. If I had my biggest reason for shopping for a new alarm limit, it would be because I was tired of the sudden blaring of my watch, while in the middle of deep sleep. The T276B is the alarm volume gradually increases, giving you a more peaceful wake-up.NATURE SOUNDS. Another feature I wanted in an alarm clock was the ability to fall asleep listening to the sounds of nature The T276B has three options: bubbling brook, waves, and forests. Unfortunately, the loops had very short and less reassuring than I had hoped - hence only 4 stars for this band product.VARIABLE SLEEP. Another interesting thing about this product is that you fall asleep either nature sounds or radio at a "volume of sleep" variable, while maintaining a strong volume. All alarm in all an excellent product with some other great features that I have have no place suggests. 18 of 18 customers found this review helpful. Large automatic adjustment function with Internet Explorer Good: 1 Adapts automatically after a certain time loss2 power. AlarmsBad two things: 1 The function of nature does not sound good - the quality is poor.2. Makes a loud beeping of the alarm is set - really boring late at night when setting the Clock time.3. Display is too bright at night, even after dimming to 21 of 23 people found the following review helpful Do not do it for a client, I recently bought an alarm clock. He seemed every possible feature you could want in an alarm, but all of these features are much cheaper. The LCD screen is always lit, what a distraction during the night, the sound quality of the real two small speakers, mono my first transistor radio recall in 1975, the sounds of nature really nice if they did not get column terrible. The long and short of it is, all these properties for the low price, I got what I paid. See all 8 reviews ...
