PERRY: No bull, Denver — it's all about Aurora
And we stand here Aurora, stunned. Just like Eve Harrington in “All About Eve,” stinging from the slap Denver just delivered because of our impertinence about that city’s beloved stock show.
Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy night.
The fur has been flying the past few days after hotel giant Gaylord announced it would bring a 1,500-room behemoth to northeast Aurora, which will pay up to $300 million in tax credits for the privilege. That steamed Downtown Denver business folks who are already worried about big-name corporations being syphoned off to the burbs. But what’s pushing Denverites over the edge is the unravelling story that the annual Western Stock Show is trying to sneak off to Aurora, too.
Queue the screeching violins.
Of all the billions of celluloid frames I’ve watched over the years, few have stayed with me like the scenes from Bette Davis’ famed movie of a conniving, starry-eyed prima donna daring to take on the Hollywood heavyweights. And of all the unsavory turmoil infused in that movie, the scene where the imperious bully Addison DeWitt whacks Eve across the face for arrogantly plotting out her own future is unforgettable.
“I’m Addison DeWitt. I’m nobody’s fool, least of all yours.”
We’re getting the same treatment from Denver city councilmen and Downtown Denver hotel owners who are shocked, shocked and dismayed that the much ballyhooed stock show would not only seriously consider walking out on Denver, but that the venerable old cow show would leave Denver for — for — Aurora, the presumptuous tramp of the metro area.
The unmitigated gall. The horrifying shame. The impudence. What will people say at the club?
I know that I’m thinking that someone seriously needs to cut egomaniacal Denver nabobs down to the level they belong.
First off, let’s just talk about regional cooperation, or the lack thereof. Denver divas are pulling up their evening gloves and swinging at the notion that the Holy Cow Show, which brings millions of tourist dollars to the Denver area each January, might best be served by a regional effort to expand it in Aurora, proposing that Denver and Aurora share costs and revenues. How dare we, Denver says.
Why would we, I ask? Supposedly, Coors Field and Invesco Field at Mile High, which are actually paid for with your tax dollars as well as everyone else’s in the metro area, are regional, cooperative facilities.
