GENERAL FISHING:

Winter has finally arrived and with a vengeance. Once again this last week hasn’t been brilliant from a fishing perspective. Along with big seas and large swells has come the result of all of that offshore activity in the form of weed - and lots of it. Many local beaches are thick with oceanic debris and it’s hard to find a spot where we can drop a line without bringing in some ‘salad’.

The only anglers who are happy about these conditions are the crazy one who go chasing snapper from the rocks during a blow. These anglers are probably ‘  a few kangaroos short in the top paddock’  when it comes to common sense. Who in their right mind would give up a warm bed to go and sit in the rain and wind just to catch a fish? With temperatures set to drop to below 5 C over the next few days it’s no wonder that ‘normal’ people look amazed when these anglers are going fishing.

A few positives to come as a result of the inclement weather have been the increase of activity in the river with bream anglers out in numbers and many catching good fish. Water will start to flow into the dams and this in turn will also mean that there will be some run-off into the Swan River catchment area. It doesn’t happen instantly, but it builds up and there will be a noticeable increase in dam water levels over the next few weeks. The river system really needs some very prolonged rain to really flush the system out and clean out a lot of the sediment that harbours nutrient. Hopefully this will occur this year and it will bring a cleaner and healthier system for the next few years. It will also slow down the rates of algal blooms that kill so many fish at the height of summer. Freshwater anglers will be a lot happier as well, as some good winter rains in the south-west streams and rivers will provide some good fishing for trout towards the end of the year.

School holidays will soon be on us once again and there are going to be a lot of younger anglers out trying their luck. Anglers who are travelling during the break are advised to check in with local tackle shops for current reports on angling activity. Some anglers fishing in holiday destinations to the north of Perth are reporting that there is not a lot of activity from the beaches, however boat anglers have been taking some good fish. Popular locations south of Perth are reporting steady fishing from the more sheltered waters and there have been some good fish being taken.
