The 3- by 12-inch jewelry box reportedly contained the following pieces of jewelry: a ladies’ yellow gold one carat diamond cluster ring, size 8; a ladies’ yellow gold .25 carat diamond engagement ring, size 8; a ladies’ yellow gold wedding band, size 8; a ladies’ yellow gold diamond pair cluster ring with one small diamond missing, size 8; a ladies’ large topaz ring, size 8; and a ladies’ yellow gold ring with a green stone, size 8, Brock said. • A thief reportedly carried away an orthodontist’s office’s exterior air conditioning unit, Brock said. An employee of Cormney Orthodontics, 519 Hampton Way, reported Monday that the unit, valued at $1,800, had been stolen from the business over the weekend. The following items were reported stolen: a black carry-on luggage bag; a black leather jewelry box; a set of Callaway golfing irons; a set of TaylorMade golfing woods; a black South Bay golf bag; a pair of black and white FootJoy golf shoes, size 14; a silver colored Weil wristwatch; a set of gold cuff links with a tie clasp; a set of silver cuff links with a money clip; four Tommy Bahama shirts and various other clothing; an old silver wedding ring; and a cordless razor.  He reported to police Monday that his car was parked outside the business at 301 Big Hill Avenue that morning when the alleged thief broke the latch on the rear hatch and stole the following items: a Garmin Nuvi GPS unit; a JVC in-dash stereo with a 7-inch touch screen: a pair of Oakley M-frame sunglasses; a blue and black Combat Virus softball bat; a Rawlings first baseman’s mitt; a pair of black and white Nike steel football cleats, size 13; an unknown brand 10-inch subwoofer inside a custom box; a pair of black and white Ringer softball cleats, size 9-10; and a Richmond Chamber of Commerce bag. The total estimated loss is $1,685, Brock said.

Question about photographing sterling silver jewelry?

I am getting a glare when I take photos of my sterling silver jewelry .I am using a light box ,with lamps on the sides and on the top.I set my digital camera to tungsten in the white balance setting.I also turned off the flash.ISO is set to 200.Not sure is that setting is correct.Still getting a whitish glare,especially on the attached crystals.What else can I try to get less glare?

Jewelery is difficult to photograph because of highlights. Do a search on the web on this subject. There are a few sites that give good tips. My favorite is using a plastic gallon milk jug as a diffuser.

You can also use baffles to take out highlights. Hold up dark cards to eliminate the highlights (blocks the light that causes the highlight).

If the glare can’t be controlled with lighting and various angles, you can try a dulling spray. It wipes off. This is good for product photography with shiny metal bits.

Last resort is to use HDRI techniques. This is a lot of work for something that can be controlled by proper lighting.

align_image_stack.exe and enfuse.exe from the Hugin set of tools are good combination of tools for HDRI.

The lowest ISO setting is what you want to use as this will give you the cleanest image quality (least amount of noise). Set the white balance to your light source or use a custom white balance setting. Sounds like you have the basics in hand, it’s now a matter of fiddling with the lighting setup.

Can’t open music box jewelry case. Decorative key lost. Any ideas?

The jewelry box is over 30 years old and came with a silver decorative key. During the recent flood we had, I lost the key and haven’t been able to open it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The hole where the key is inserted is actually a keyhole design, and I believe the key had two notches. The key couldn’t have been more than 1/2″ if that long.
