Professional background: Ed Gomiela is a master plumber and has more than 30 years of plumbing experience. He received his journeyman's license from Charlotte County Vocational Technical Center in Port Charlotte. He previously worked as a service technician for Atlantic Plumbing and Solar Engineering for 10 years and for Charlotte Plumbing, focusing on new construction plumbing, for 10 years. Ryan Gomiela, Ed's son, has three years of plumbing experience and is working toward obtaining his master plumber license. "(Ryan's) been going with his dad since he was a little boy," Ed said.

Ryan has an associate's degree from Brevard Community College. Before working in the plumbing industry full time, he worked as an assistant manager in food service for two years; as an auto performance retailer for Titan Motorsports for two years; and at Rose Exhibits doing trade show transport, setup and construction for four years.

Business philosophy: To be polite, be on time, leave the work area clean, educate customers about plumbing, and leave them fully satisfied with their service. "We're out to build relationships," Ed said. "Not to make a quick buck," Ryan added. "We're trying to break the stereotype of the typical plumber as far as, answer the phone, be on time, be professional, clean, (and) show up with a fully stocked truck."

Business goal: "To have a successful business with the reputation of not only being a good plumber, but a good individual," Ryan said. Ed added, "And being honest." On being innovative: "(We) combine his (Ed's) 30 years of experience with my innovative thinking," Ryan said. Ed said, "Mixing the old school plumbing with modern-day technology."

Biggest challenge: "The licensing procedure," Ryan said. "It was time-consuming. There are mountains of paperwork and numerous departments you have to deal with.

HELP! Shower faucet valve repair

The cold water valve on our shower was getting increasingly mushy, every time we used it we had to turn the valve a little further to shut it off then last night we couldn't shut the cold water off completely. So this morning I shut off the main water, removed the valve guts and got a replacement from our local plumbing store. I used the special L tool to remove the valve seat. I tried to install the new seat but couldn't get it to thread, so peered in with a flashlight and saw that there was a crack in the threads (running perpendicular to the threads) at the 6 o'clock position and that area appears bent. Hard to see back there but it also appears that there might be a crack running parallel to the threads at the 3 o'clock position. Questions: Think of it like this..your bath spout is the biggest spout in your home. It's one of those things in where you have to walk away from it for 5-10 minutes, and come back to see if it's still dripping. Same goes for shower only applications. If it's a shower only, I always take the shower head off, cause water gets trapped in the shower head itself, and people assume the shower is leaking. Unfortunately, this wall is an exterior wall so busting the tile will be the only option. I wonder if we should consider making the hole big enough to replace the hot water valve, too. We replaced the guts in it last year but left the seat since we couldn't get it out. What causes the threads on the seat connection to distort and crack like that? House was built in 1993, that doesn't seem THAT old. Unfortunately, this wall is an exterior wall so busting the tile will be the only option. I wonder if we should consider making the hole big enough to replace the hot water valve, too. We replaced the guts in it last year but left the seat since we couldn't get it out. What causes the threads on the seat connection to distort and crack like that? House was built in 1993, that doesn't seem THAT old. So... is there anything we can do for a 'long term' temporary repair? If we could get the seat to stay in place somehow, the valve would work at least for a while. We tried bending the bent portion back in place but couldn't. The seat won't thread on, not just because of the crack but because it is bent it is now a larger diameter opening that we are trying to thread into. Do they make larger seats that we could try to screw in there?
