The racy, restrained Katy Perry
No cross to bearBefore she became Katy Perry, pop star, the woman born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson made her recording debut as Kate Hudson, Christian music artist.
Made in Nashville when she was 15, her self-titled debut album for the now-defunct Red Hill Records featured such songs of hope as “Oh Happy Day,” “When There’s Nothing Left” and “Faith Won’t Fail.”
Perry’s parents are both evangelical ministers. She grew up in a staunchly conservative, born-again Christian household and was not allowed to watch MTV or listen to secular music.
While she has since broadened her spiritual outlook, the “Jesus” tattoo on Perry’s wrist is as visible as the day she got it. And “Who Am I Living For?” — a song from her latest album — contains at least one biblical reference, even if the rhyme it sets up is less than inspired: So I pray for a favor like Esther / I need your strength to handle the pressure. Is Katy Perry a really bad good girl, or a really good bad girl? Discuss. In truth, this former Christian music singer-turned-global pop sensation owes much of her success to her ability to strike a balance between the two — good and bad, naughty and nice, sugar and lots and lots of spice. With a constantly changing wardrobe that’s more skimpy than skanky — during her concert performances of “Hot N Cold,” she undergoes seven costume changes in about four minutes — Perry projects a bigger-than-life stage persona that’s suggestive, but not too threatening. And that’s a good thing, since a distinct (and loudly enthusiastic) majority of the audience attending this Santa Barbara native’s ongoing “California Dreams 2011 Tour” is composed of young girls … and their parents. The tour, which includes a Tuesday stop at the Valley View Casino Center (formerly the San Diego Sports Arena), has been selling out at nearly every stop. Perry’s show here sold out in two weeks. In late July, the placement of the Valley View stage was changed to allow 500 additional tickets to go on sale; several hundred more were released this week and also sold out. By the time Perry starts her performance here Tuesday, attendance for her concert will be a full-house 10,000, according to the show’s promoter. That number — make that most numbers — are significant to Perry. Her latest album, 2010’s “Teenage Dream,” has thus far yielded four No. 1 singles: “Teenage Dream”; “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg); “Firework”; and “E.T.” (featuring Kanye West). On May 12, she became the first artist in history to remain in Billboard’s Top 10 singles charts for 52 consecutive weeks. Her hit singles, which also include “Ur So Gay” and “I Kissed a Girl” (both from 2008), have together sold more than 50 million digital downloads.
