In New Hampshire, social issues don't rally GOP faithful | The Republic

Bedford, NH - seduction, Rick Perry of New Hampshire, on Wednesday, was heavy with the priorities of tea parties.

Social issues are not among them.

"Live free or die," the Texas governor told business leaders and civic "policy and eggs" breakfast, reciting the motto of the state. "I mean, you gotta love it . This is a good memory of a little place in Texas called the Alamo. "

Then he criticized the Fed Challenge, although without the charge of treason, as he says, earned him "Conferences" earlier this week. And he put forward his doubts about climate change.

Perry alleged force in the field of GOP presidential is that, unlike Mitt Romney, he may appeal to social conservatives. And in Iowa or South Carolina, the governor could have offered a more balanced set of talking points.

But it will not work in New Hampshire, where even many Republicans to accept gay marriage.

"If he starts making the rounds of the Rotary clubs and rallies GOP talk about social problems," it turns off more votes than it attracts, said Mike Dennehy, McCain campaign manager New Hampshire in 2000 and National Director of Policy in 2008.

But Dave Carney, longtime adviser to Perry, is a resident of New Hampshire and the Premier of the state GOP strategist. "Carney is not fictitious, and he certainly knows better than anyone New Hampshire," said Dennehy.

Among New Hampshire GOP voters, support for abortion rights running higher than among all voters nationwide, Democrats included. New Hampshire ranks 49th in religiosity in a Gallup poll taken two years ago. When the Republicans in the legislature attempted to repeal gay marriage, they found that over 40 percent of their voters opposed the effort.

Just about anywhere else, and certainly in the South, "is a bread and butter issue Republican," said Andy Smith, director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. "Appealing to religious values, moral, is not going very well here. You do not have to deal with a socially conservative electorate. "

This is not grass-friendly candidates in the South. George W. Bush 2000 campaign ran aground near there, and in 2008, Iowa Mike Huckabee, the winner could not get traction in the northeast.

On the positive side to Perry, most New Hampshire Republicans are strong fiscal conservatives.

"If he can stick to that message and talk about employment, jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs is what to do," said Smith.
