Fireworks often escape communities' budget woes
Marysville Mayor John Gore points out that freedom isn't free, and neither is the celebration of it. Yes, times are tough and governments are trying to rein in their budgets, but a few thousand dollars here and there to honor this country's patriotism isn't too much to ask, he said.
"The Fourth of July is a celebration of freedom, and so it comes down to this: $2,500 seems a small amount for something as important as that," Gore said. That's how much the city chips in for the annual local fireworks display.
"It sounds corny, I know, but shouldn't communities be able to celebrate something so important together and have a little fun?"
Not on the public's dime, countered Matt A. Mayer, president of the Buckeye Institute, a conservative public-policy watchdog and research group. Mayer says private donations should pay for all of the holiday hoopla.
Mayer said he was struck while watching the evening news recently by the length of the list of community fireworks displays. The cities often shoulder at least some of the financial responsibility for the shows even if it is just providing police officers or firefighters.
"There's an absurdity in that," he said. "Given the fiscal restraints we are all operating under, no tax dollars should be used for this sort of thing."
In Marysville, American Legion Post 79 has organized the holiday festivities for as long as anyone can recall. It takes about $7,000 for the fireworks at the Union County Fairgrounds and $1,000 to cover incidentals, said Rolly Rausch, the post's adjutant.
Each year, including this one, the city of Marysville gives $2,500. County commissioners have pledged the same. The remainder comes from private donations.
The combination of public and private funding works well, Rausch said.
"It's unifying to celebrate our country together," he said. "And who doesn't get chills every time they see fireworks go off?"
The granddaddy of central Ohio's fireworks displays is in Downtown Columbus. Red, White & Boom takes place today and carries a price tag of a little more than $550,000, all of it coming from private donations and sponsorships.
The organizers pay for extra-duty police officers, firefighters, inspectors and for trash collection and cleanup, said executive director Mike Collins.
More than a half-million people come Downtown for the day, and the event generates at least $9 million in revenue for the community by way of hotels, restaurants and other businesses.
