Prayer, song mark forum for District 10 House candidates
— In a forum Tuesday night, four of the seven candidates running for the House District 10 seat declared their stances regarding taxes, education and the state economy.The candidates briefly introduced themselves to an audience of about 20 at the forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of the Clemson Area. The event was held at the Anderson County Library’s main branch downtown.
Six Republicans are running for the seat: Hamp Johnson of Piedmont; Mark Powell of Williamston; and Mike Jones, Joshua Putnam, Dr. Joe Mills and Eric McConnell, all of Powdersville. Dave Ballard of Williamston is representing the Constitution Party. No Democrats registered to run.
Mills was scheduled to attend the forum, but his seat sat empty. McConnell and Johnson did not participate because of other engagements. A member of the league read a brief statement by McConnell that mentioned he was spending time with his family for the Fourth of July weekend.
McConnell said in his statement that he believes in small government, is pro life and is family oriented.
Many of the candidates professed their Christian faith, and Jones requested that he lead a prayer at the beginning.
The first question was whether people should pay the same tax rate whether they buy a luxury yacht or a less-expensive car. The car tax includes motorcycles and boats, and candidates were given the question before the forum.
Powell said he was in favor of a fair tax that was the same rate for a Chrysler PT Cruiser or a Lamborghini.
Ballard, an architect from Williamston, called the state and local tax systems corrupt. He said he supports a fair tax.
“But we don’t want to fall in the trap of class warfare and envy,” he said. “We see too often in the media the castigation of the rich because they’re greedy. But if you read the Good Book you’ll find envy is just as bad as greed.” Ballard frequently waved a pocket-size copy of the Constitution.
Candidates answered questions written by audience members for the remainder of the forum, including one about a tax break for Internet retailer Amazon.com. Its Lexington County distribution center will create 2,000 jobs.
Gov. Nikki Haley opposed a deal that the legislature eventually passed allowing Amazon a five-year exemption from collecting sales taxes from South Carolina shoppers.
Putnam said the House vote to bring Internet retailer Amazon.com to Lexington County was owed to voters.
