The 62nd annual Kutztown Folk Festival returns Saturday

About 150,000 visitors are expected to explore the rich and textured fabric of traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch community at the 62nd annual Kutztown Folk Festival this weekend.

The Kutztown Folk Festival opens Saturday on the Kutztown Fairgrounds in tandem with America's Independence Day celebration, showcasing Pennsylvania Dutch flavors, sounds, arts and crafts and an evolving culture. It runs through July 10.

"We always time the festival around the Fourth of July weekend," says event organizer David Fooks.

Fooks says this year, music by 15-year-old local fiddle player William Dixon will wow and delight audiences. "William is lauded as one of the best young fiddle players in the country right now, and we're pleased to have him join us," Fooks says.

In addition to the music, attendees young and old will be reminded of how arduous a task cleaning clothing and bedding used to be in this year's inaugural Wash House display. The display will feature about 30 different antique, hand-operated washing machines. The machines will be available for use, too.

"Kids can come in and try their hand at washing clothes in these old time machines," Fooks says.

Fooks says the machines belong to a local couple, who collects them. "These hand use washing machines are from the 1910s and 1920s," He says.

Fooks says while there is plenty from the cultural past of the groups that settled here, mainly from Germany during the late 1700s and 1800s, the present is also represented. "While Pennsylvania Dutch were farmers and worked in agriculture, today most are in business, or hands-on crafts," He explains.

"One of the reasons the Pennsylvania Dutch culture and traditions remain strong is because of the Amish and Mennonites in the area. But even the less conservative groups continue to hold on," Fooks adds.

From ham and chicken dinners to chicken potpie and ox roast, sauerkraut, funnel cake and fritters, apple dumplings, shoofly pie and more, guests will be able to sample the tastes and flavors of the Pennsylvania Dutch culture.

These staples of Pennsylvania Dutch kitchens have been handed down and served "family style", where large bowls and platters heaped with food are placed on the table to be passed around by the community gathered there.

Hex signs, kaleidoscope-colored quilts, brass bands, fiddling and dancing, as well as lessons in the Pennsylvania Dutch dialect, will also be featured during the festival.
